Beast Wars Scorponok
Scorponok would be the first mega sized Beast Wars toy released, and it certainly is
mega. Mega sized and mega cool. These days Scorponok will set you back a nice chunk of
change for a boxed one, and even a loose one will cost more than you'd like to pay for
something that's been played with. I bought a loose one off eBay that was missing its
missiles (cyber-bee still intact though) for like $17, and that's one of the lowest prices
I've seen it go for.
At any rate, in beast mode Scorps is a rather large scorpion (he's about the same length
as Inferno), though you wouldn't know it from his scorpion legs which are absolutely
useless (yes, Scorponok was the first to contract the common belly crawling disease from
short, inadequate legs) and are dwarfed by his massive pincers. As a scorpion he looks
pretty cool, though I'd venture to say Quickstrike looks cooler, and he even has a neat
tail stinging action. It's very rare to find a scorpion toy that is actually capable
of stinging something other than his own head.
The only thing odd about the beast mode is the fact that his pincers are a weird purple
color. I'm not sure what that's about, but it makes him look like he's wearing weird
scorpion gloves or something.
Transformation is pretty simple. His head becomes his feet (as far as I know, no other
Beast Wars toy does this) and he gets folded in half. Although robot mode seems kinda top
heavy (his skinny legs have to support his massive claws, large tail and pretty wide upper
body) he actually stands fine, though his legs are a tad loose at the hips (this may be
because mine is used however).
And of course, Scorps is not without his features. One claw fires two missiles and the
other fires a spiffy folding cyber-bee, via the show. He also has that spring loaded
tail striking action which works in robot mode (with major hand support), though
it really only hits slightly above and in front of his face.
All in all there's few complaints I have about this toy. The major one would be the
cyber-bee doesn't quite load right (once again, this may be because mine is used, though
I have heard complaints of this elsewhere) and one of its wings doesn't stay put so I've
had to put a small piece of tape on one of his claws. However, these problems aside,
Scorponok is a pretty cool toy to have and you may consider picking one up if you don't
mind footing the price tag.
