Japanese Wobbegong
Scientifically:
Orectolobus japonicus.
What To Look For:
A small wobbegong with a highly decorative pattern
of spots and lines and 5 or 6 fleshy growths under
the eyes. The nasal barbels are sensitive feelers
that can detect prey buried in sand. A nocturnal
species, living over the sea floor, it is known to
migrate inshore to mate and give birth.
Size:
Up to 1.2 m.
Distribution:
North Western Pacific, Japan, Taiwan and Philippines.
Food:
Bottom-living invertebrates and fish.
Breeding:
Live-bearer, with up to 20 young per litter.
Danger To Humans:
Not recorded as dangerous.
