Cookiecutter Shark
Scientifically:
Isistius brasiliensis.
What To Look For:
A little, bullet-shaped shark renowned for the large teeth and
sucking lips it uses to take plugs of tissue from large fish and
whales. It has a prominent dark collar over the gill region, large
eyes, a bulbous, short snout and the 2 dorsal fins are set far back
on the body. This wide-ranging shark lives at depths of between 100
and 3500 m, and migrates to the surface at night to feed. It has
been recorded to bite the rubber sonar domes of nuclear
submarines. This shark is also known as the Cigar Shark.
Size:
Up to 50 cm.
Distribution:
Worldwide, scattered throughout tropical and warm temperate seas.
Food:
Attacks large bony fish, dolphins and whales, and even the Megamouth
Shark, leaving crater wounds on its victims.
Breeding:
Not known.
Danger To Humans:
Unlikely to attack bathers owing to habitat preferences, but still a
remote possibility.
