Sharpnose Sevengill Cowshark
Scientifically:
Heptranchias perlo.
What To Look For:
A strong swimmer with a narrow, pointed head and slender body. The
upper surface of the body is brownish-grey, but this fades to pale
brown on the underside. The large eyes are useful for hunting on
the sea floor at depths to 1000 m, and the jagged teeth help it to
grasp slippery prey. This shark is also known as the Perlon Shark.
Size:
Up to 1.3 m.
Distribution:
Wide-ranging in tropical and temperate seas. Mostly offshore near
the bottom, at depths of 100-450 m; elsewhere, from 27-720 m.
Food:
Fish, small bony fish, small sharks and rays, shrimp, crabs, lobsters,
cuttlefish and squid.
Breeding:
Live-bearer, with up to 20 pups per litter.
Danger To Humans:
This shark is aggressive and bites when captured, but is too small
to be dangerous. Caught by bottom trawlers.
