Black Dogfish
Scientifically:
Centroscyllium fabricii.
What To Look For:
A uniformly dark dogfish with two dorsal fins,
each with a spine on the leading edge. It
schools in large numbers on the edge of
continental shelves at depths of between 200
and 1600 m, where temperatures range from 1-4
degrees Celcius. In winter months it has been
recorded nearer the surface.
Size:
Up to 1 m.
Distribution:
Mainly northern Atlantic, but some records from
the south-east of Africa.
Food:
Mostely euphausids, shrimp, barracudina,
lanternfish, jellyfish, shellfish, octopus,
squid and deep-water bony fish.
Breeding:
Live-bearer. Litter size not known.
Danger To Humans:
Not dangerous, but should be handled with care
as spines are sharp.
