Gulper Shark
Scientifically:
Centrophorus granulosus.
What To Look For:
Like other gulper sharks, this species has 2 dorsal fins,
each with a large spine. This greyish shark lives in
waters to 1200 m deep. To hunt in this dark environment
the Gulper Shark has developed a broad, receptorcovered
snout that can detect movement, large eyes to make use of
any available light and small teeth to grip securely.
Size:
Up to 1.5 m.
Distribution:
Scattered throughout the Atlantic, but concentrated in
the western Atlantic and Mediterranean. Some records
from the Indo-Pacific.
Food:
Bony fish (hake and lanternfish).
Breeding:
Live-bearer, litter size not known.
Danger To Humans:
Not dangerous, but should be handled with care s spines
are sharp.
