Crested Bullhead Shark
Scientifically:
Heterodontus galeatus.
What To Look For:
A sluggish bullhead shark with characteristic
grey-brown colour, broad, dark saddle markings
on the head and body and prominent spined dorsal
fins. The snout is blunt with a high forehead
and the fins are paddle-like. It is common on
sea floors, usually close inshore, where it
occupies rocky crevices during the day and
emerges to hunt at night.
Size:
Up to 1.5 m.
Distribution:
East coast of Australia.
Food:
Sea urchins, crabs, sea snails and small fish.
Breeding:
Egg cases are laid at depths of 20-30 m. among
seaweed and sponges; these hatch 8 months later.
Danger To Humans:
Not known to be dangerous.
