Lowfin Gulper Shark
Scientifically:
Centrophorus lusitanicus.
What To Look For:
This gulper shark has two large dorsal fins each with a
spine, and a broad, pointed snout. The body is either
grey or grey-brown. The large eyes help it to see in
low light conditions as it hunts prey over the sea bed
at depths of 1500 m. A target species for fishermen in
the eastern Atlantic.
Size:
Up to 1.6 m. Females are slightly larger than males.
Distribution:
Eastern North Atlantic, western Indian Ocean, South
Africa and western Pacific.
Food:
Fish, lobster, squid, small dogfish and crabs.
Breeding:
Live-bearer, with six pups per litter.
Danger To Humans:
Not dangerous, but should be handled with care as spines
are sharp. Occasionally caught by bottom trawlers.
