Pygmy Shark
Scientifically:
Euprotomicrus bispinatus.
What To Look For:
This pygmy shark has large eyes and a round head
and snout. The tail is spade-shaped and there are
white edges to the fins. Living in mid-water at
depths of between 2000 and 10,000 m, this species
undergoes extensive vertical migrations to
surface waters at night to feed.
Size:
Up to 27 cm.
Distribution:
Worldwide, scattered throughout tropical and warm
temperate seas.
Food:
Deep-water bony fish and squid.
Breeding:
Live-bearer, with 8 young per litter.
Danger To Humans:
Too small to be dangerous.
