Port Jackson Shark
Scientifically:
Heterodontus portusjacksoni.
What To Look For:
This distinctive bullhead shark has a large blunt
head, large spined dorsal fins and a grey body with
a conspicuous black harness on the back and flanks.
A common, inshore shark living in caves with sandy
floors. It is territorial and undergoes short
seasonal migrations.
Size:
Up to 1.65 m. Females are larger than males.
Distribution:
Southern Australia.
Food:
Prey items include sea urchins, starfish, bottom-living
invertebrates and occasionally garbage: mammal fur,
orange and potato peelings have all been found in
specimens.
Breeding:
Live-bearer. They favour certain communal breeding
sites.
Danger To Humans:
Considered harmless, but bites if provoked.
