1880: Noel Rabun Sr. had two borders: W. Rose, Female(36) School teacher, born
Ireland and Robert LeMartin, Male(29) born South Carolina.
Dallas Morning News 'YESTERDAYS' column, Noel moved from Polk Co. to Kissimmee
River, and purchased land from Henry Parker. He gave up ranching in 1892 at age
of 72, and to Bartow area were he died shortly before 90th birthday. Sons Noel,
Peter, William, and David remained in Basinger.
Indian Wars Pensions: Noel R., alias Rabon, SC-2576 FL 23 Sep 1892, Florida
Volunteers.
Pioneers of Wiregrass: Noel served as Private in Capt. Robert Brown's Company
of Florida Mounted Militia, 27 Sep - 8 Dec 1837, and in Capt. Robert Sandlin's
Company in 1838. In 1838, while his company was patroling the area around
Okefenokee Swamp, he was shot in the shoulder by an Indian. Noel also served
under Capt. William Cone from Nov 1840 to Mar 1841. In 1844 he moved to
Hillsborough County, there serving as Private in Capt. L.S. Sparkman's Company
from 25 Jul 1849 to 23 Oct 1849, and in Capt F.M. Durrance's Company 29 Dec
1855 to Dec 1857.
In Hillsborough Co., Noel living about 25 miles from Fort Brooke. Noel and his
family arrived there by family caravan, along with he brother John Baggs
Raulerson, brother's in law William Wiggins and John Thomas. In 1861, this
section of Hillsborough became Polk County. Noel living on the east side of
Lake Hancock until 1874, when he moved to the Kissimmee River Valley, near Fort
Bassinger. In 1891 Noel and his wife moved back to Bartow, Polk County, where
she died in 1904 and he died in 1910. They were buried in the family cemetery
on Lake Hancock, Whatley Private Cemetery. Later their graves were moved to the
Gandy Cemetery east of Bartow.
